Natural wonders need to be experienced naturally

Will the Federal Government's "look but don't touch" approach to the environment €“ as exemplified by the new "Peter Garrett Memorial Viewing Deck" at Uluru ("Sunrise industry: the new view of Uluru is a sight worth millions", October 8) €“ be extended to other natural wonders in Australia? One imagines a Great Barrier Reef bathing pond and a Fraser Island sandpit are also in the works. In limiting our experience of nature to such sanitised government-approved vantage points, we risk breeding apathy and indifference, rather than instilling a sense of wonder and awe at the natural wonders we are lucky to live with €“ ones that can only be fully appreciated first hand. Now where's that $50 for the new Uluru virtual climbing adventure at Darling Harbour? Why travel all the way to Central Australia when you can experience the Rock in just the same way in air-conditioned comfort in Sydney? Bush flies included at no extra charge.Marc HendrickxBerowra Heights
