TWO Sydney men who started a fire on Queensland's world heritage-listed Fraser Island must pay a total of $30,000.
Shaun Vincent Murnane, of Miranda, and Jason Guy Quick, of Panania, were fined yesterday after pleading guilty in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court. They were charged with starting a blaze which burned on Fraser Island for almost three weeks in January and February this year. The fire threatened property, killed wildlife and destroyed 2000ha of vegetation in Great Sandy National Park.
The two had lit a campfire despite a fire ban. The fire later reignited, spreading to nearby bush. Each was fined $3500 and ordered to pay $10,000 compensation and $1500 costs.
